DENVER — Warning to Southern delegates to the 2008 Democratic National
Convention in Denver this August: it will be a no-fry zone.

As part of the effort to make the August 25-28 convention the greenest ever, the Democrats' guidelines for food catering include one that strikes at the heart of Southern cuisine: no fried food.

No fried chicken. No fried catfish. No fried green tomatoes. No fried okra. No fried anything.

In promoting healthy eating habits, the Democratic guidelines say every meal should be nutritious and include "at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white."

"It's the new patriotism," says Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the driving force behind the greening of the Democratic convention.

However, if presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain starts gaining in the polls on Barack Obama, who will accept the Democratic nomination in Denver, the Democrats may find they've got bigger fish to fr? - uh, make that - bake.

Obama Will Require You To Work

So said his wife, several months ago.

Seems he's going to make good on that. As said today in Colorado:

12:18 p.m. "When it comes to second-language learners, the most important thing is not to get bogged down in ideology, but figure out what works," Obama says. "Everybody should be bilingual, or everybody should be trilingual." The comments drew loud applause.

This on the heels of last week's statement:

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said.

So, to recap: You will be forced to learn Spanish (not the other way around, with Spanish-speakers learning English, of course) and another useful language (Arabic, maybe, for travel in a future Muslim Europe?), and will only be allowed as much food and fuel as the government (maybe ours, maybe not) thinks you need.

Where else have I heard of stuff like that? Oh, yeah:

John 'French' Kerry wanted a global test on security. I suppose Barry Messiah wants a global test on how much beef you can consume.
